This short video explaining the liter comes from Hong Kong but given the message and the production values it may as well have been a '70s US promotion.
In 1975, the US passed the Metric Conversion Act, saying that enough was enough, and the US needed to get in line with the rest of the world and use the metric system.
Needless to say, anyone familiar with America today knows this didn't go over really well, and by 1982 the Reagan Administration had given up on implementing the law.
One of the few things that has changed, actually, is using liters rather than gallons/pints, like in the 2-liter soft drink bottle.
But to give a sense of how non-metric the US, here's what most people still use:
- Fahrenheit and not celsius for measuring the temperature
- Feet and inches rather than meters and centimeters
- Acres to describe size of land
- Miles instead of kilometers
- Pounds and ounces rather than kilograms
